Clay-Base Bunkers and Why Local Sand Plays Differently

Not all bunker sand behaves the same, and a lot of national fitting guidance quietly assumes a type most Tennessee courses don't actually have.

Sand isn't a single material from a fitting standpoint. Grain size, angularity, and how much fine material sits mixed in with it all change how a wedge sole enters and exits a bunker shot — and a lot of it comes down to what's sitting underneath the sand layer in the first place.

Silica Sand vs. Clay-Base Sand

A lot of published bounce guidance leans on assumptions built around fine, rounded coastal silica sand, which compacts loosely and offers relatively consistent resistance. Courses built over the red clay common through the Tennessee River Valley often use a coarser, more angular sand on top of a firmer clay base beneath it, which changes how a sole behaves at the bottom of the swing.

Why the Base Layer Matters as Much as the Sand

On a shallow bunker with sand sitting directly over compacted clay, a swing that would normally bottom out cleanly in the sand can instead catch the firmer layer underneath if the sand depth is thin — something that varies bunker to bunker and even spot to spot within the same bunker after a dry stretch.

What This Means for Bounce Selection

Players who mostly play courses with coarse, clay-base sand often do better with slightly more bounce and a fuller sole than a generic chart would suggest, since the extra support helps the sole resist digging into a firmer-than-expected base layer. Players who travel and play a mix of sand types benefit from testing across more than one condition before settling on a single number.
