Setting Putter Length From Posture, Not a Height Chart

Height charts are a reasonable starting guess. They're a poor substitute for actually watching how someone stands over the ball.

Walk into most pro shops and you'll find a putter length chart tied almost entirely to height. It's not useless as a rough starting point, but it quietly assumes every golfer of a given height stands over the ball the same way — and in twelve years of putter fittings, we can say confidently that they don't.

Why Height Alone Misses the Point

Two golfers of identical height can have meaningfully different arm length, spine tilt, and natural setup posture. One might stand tall with arms hanging close to the body; another might bend more from the hips with arms extended further out. Both differences change the ideal putter length independent of height entirely.

What We Actually Measure

During a fitting, we watch where your eyes sit relative to the ball at address, how far your hands hang from your body in a natural setup, and how your posture holds up over a longer putting session, not just a single practice stroke. A length that looks right for ten seconds sometimes breaks down once fatigue sets in over eighteen holes.

Eye Position Changes Everything

If your eyes sit noticeably inside or outside the ball at address, that alone can distort your read of the target line before the stroke even starts. Adjusting length and lie together often corrects eye position more effectively than either change made on its own.

A putter that's technically the "right" length for your height can still put your eyes in the wrong place over the ball.

A Practical Way to Self-Check

Set up to a putt normally, then have someone drop a ball from just under your lead eye. If it lands noticeably inside or outside the ball you're addressing, your current length or lie may not match your natural posture, even if it matches a height chart.

The Takeaway

Height is a starting point for a putter fitting, not a conclusion. If your stroke has always felt slightly off despite a putter that's "supposed" to fit your height, posture and eye position are worth checking before anything else.

Get Your Posture Checked Properly

Putter fittings include eye-line and posture measurement alongside stroke-path capture.
